What is E20 fuel.
Understanding E20 petrol
E20 is petrol blended with 20% ethanol (derived from sugarcane, corn, or other biomass) and 80% gasoline. India has been gradually increasing ethanol content in petrol, from E5 (5% ethanol) to E10 (10%) and now E20 (20%).
Starting April 1, 2026, all petrol retail outlets across India must sell only E20 petrol with a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95. This mandate was advanced significantly from the original 2030 deadline. All vehicles need to be E20 compliant to safely use this fuel.
What does E20 compliant mean?
An E20 compliant vehicle has engine and fuel system components designed to handle 20% ethanol in petrol. This includes ethanol-resistant fuel lines, seals, gaskets, O-rings, and an ECU calibrated for higher ethanol content. The terms "E20 compliant" and "E20 compatible" are used interchangeably and both mean the same thing.
All cars and bikes manufactured from April 2023 onwards under BS6 Phase 2 norms are E20 compliant by law. Older vehicles designed for E5 or E10 fuel may not be fully compliant and could experience issues with E20.
India's ethanol blending timeline
Ethanol blending at 1.5%, programme begins
E10 (10% ethanol) achieved nationwide in June
BS6 Phase 2 mandate, all new vehicles must be E20 compliant from April
20% blending target achieved in December (19.93% by July)
E20 mandatory at all pumps from April 1. RON 95 minimum. E25 transition paused.
How E20 affects your vehicle
E20 compliant vehicles (2023+)
- 1-3% mileage reduction (minor)
- No engine or fuel system damage
- Manufacturer warranty fully covers E20 use
- Higher RON 95 may improve performance slightly
Non-compliant vehicles (pre-2023)
- 5-12% mileage drop reported by owners
- Rubber fuel components may degrade faster
- Cold-start issues in winter possible
- More frequent servicing recommended
E20 petrol price in India
E20 petrol is priced the same as previous petrol grades at the pump, approximately Rs 94-105/litre depending on your city (as of July 2026). Despite containing 20% domestically-produced ethanol (which is cheaper than imported crude-derived petrol), oil companies have not reduced pump prices.
| City | E20 Price (approx) |
|---|---|
| Delhi | Rs 94.72/l |
| Mumbai | Rs 103.44/l |
| Bangalore | Rs 101.94/l |
| Chennai | Rs 100.76/l |
| Kolkata | Rs 104.95/l |
| Hyderabad | Rs 107.41/l |
Prices are approximate and vary by fuel station. Last updated July 2026.
E20 compliant bikes in India
Just like cars, all two-wheelers (bikes and scooters) manufactured from April 2023 onwards are E20 compliant under BS6 Phase 2 norms. Major brands including Honda, TVS, Bajaj, Hero MotoCorp, Royal Enfield, and Yamaha have confirmed E20 compliance for their newer models. Older bikes designed for E10 fuel may experience similar mileage drops and fuel system wear as non-compliant cars.
Why India adopted E20
Reduce crude oil imports: India imports over 85% of its crude oil. Ethanol blending reduces this dependency, saving foreign exchange.
Support farmers: Ethanol production from sugarcane, corn, and other crops provides an additional income source for Indian farmers.
Lower carbon emissions: Government claims E20 reduces CO2 emissions by 20% compared to pure petrol (though lifecycle analysis is debated).
Energy security: Domestic ethanol production strengthens India's energy self-sufficiency.
The controversy
While the government and automakers maintain that E20 is safe for all vehicles, consumer surveys paint a different picture:
- 80% of pre-2023 vehicle owners report mileage drops (LocalCircles survey, October 2025)
- 52% report increased wear and tear or repair needs
- 53% of vehicle owners rate the rollout handling as "disastrous" or "ineffective"
- An unpublished ARAI report found E20 may deteriorate rubber fuel-system components in E10-designed vehicles
- 43% of potential buyers are reconsidering new vehicle purchases due to fuel uncertainty
The government paused the E25 transition (25% ethanol) amid this backlash, and political opposition has demanded compensation for affected vehicle owners.
