India's most comprehensive E20 compliance checker

Since April 1, 2026, every petrol pump across India sells only E20 fuel, which is petrol blended with 20% ethanol. This nationwide mandate, part of the government's Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme, affects over 300 million registered vehicles. For vehicle owners, the most pressing question is simple: is my car safe to run on E20 petrol? Our E20 compliance checker answers that question instantly, for free, covering 454+ car models from 31+ brands sold in India.

How the E20 compliance checker works

Using our tool takes seconds. Select your car brand, choose your model, and optionally pick your manufacture year. The checker cross-references your vehicle against our database, built from official BS6 Phase 2 certification data, manufacturer press releases, ARAI testing records, and government notifications, to give you a clear compliance verdict. You get one of three results: fully E20 compliant, partially compliant (where newer variants are safe but older ones are not), or not E20 compliant.

For partially compliant models, our tool goes a step further. By entering your manufacture year, you get a year-specific answer. Many popular models like the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Creta, and Tata Nexon transitioned to E20 compliance partway through their production run, so knowing the exact year matters. Each model page provides a full variant-by-variant breakdown table showing fuel type, transmission, and E20 status for every version ever sold.

Why E20 compliance matters for your car

E20 compliant vehicles have ethanol-resistant fuel lines, seals, gaskets, and O-rings, plus engine calibration optimized for higher ethanol content. These vehicles can run on E20 with only a minor 1-3% mileage reduction and no risk of component damage. Non-compliant vehicles, generally those manufactured before April 2023, were designed for E5 or E10 fuel. Running them on E20 can lead to 5-12% mileage loss, accelerated wear of rubber fuel system components, cold-start difficulties in winter, and higher long-term maintenance costs.

An unpublished report from the Automotive Research Association of India confirmed that E20 can deteriorate rubber fuel-system components in vehicles not designed for it. While the government maintains that E20 is safe for all engines, consumer surveys show that 80% of pre-2023 vehicle owners have experienced noticeable mileage drops since the mandate.

E20 mileage calculator and cost impact

Beyond checking compliance, we provide a mileage impact calculator that estimates exactly how much E20 will cost you per month. Enter your current mileage, daily driving distance, and petrol price, and the calculator shows your expected mileage drop, extra monthly fuel cost, and additional annual expense. For a car averaging 18 km/l with a 30 km daily commute, a non-compliant vehicle could spend Rs 2,000-4,000 more per year on fuel, a real cost that adds up.

Trusted data sources and methodology

Our compliance data is compiled from four primary sources. First, the BS6 Phase 2 emission norms (April 2023) which require all new vehicles to be E20 compliant by law. Second, official manufacturer announcements and owner manual specifications. Honda, for example, confirmed all their petrol cars sold in India since January 2009 are E20 material-compliant. Third, ARAI and ICAT certification records for vehicle testing data. Fourth, industry reports and consumer surveys that provide real-world impact data. We update the database regularly, and every page shows when the data was last refreshed.

We also cover E20 fuel basics including India's ethanol blending timeline, how E20 affects different vehicle types, current E20 petrol prices by city, and the ongoing policy debate around the mandate. Our comprehensive FAQ answers the most common questions Indian vehicle owners ask, from whether E20 can damage engines to whether bikes and two-wheelers are affected.

This tool is completely free, with no sign-up required. We are an independent project with no affiliation to any vehicle manufacturer, oil company, or government body. Our only goal is to give every Indian vehicle owner easy access to accurate E20 compliance information.

Frequently asked questions

What is E20 fuel?

E20 is petrol blended with 20% ethanol. India mandated E20 at all petrol pumps from April 2026 as part of its ethanol blending programme to reduce carbon emissions and crude oil imports.

What does E20 compliant mean?

E20 compliant means a vehicle's engine and fuel system are designed to safely run on E20 petrol (20% ethanol blend). E20 compliant cars have ethanol-resistant fuel lines, seals, and engine calibration optimized for higher ethanol content. The terms "E20 compliant" and "E20 compatible" are used interchangeably.

How to check if my car is E20 compliant?

Use our free checker tool above - select your brand and model to get instant results. You can also check your owner's manual, fuel cap label, or manufacturer website. As a rule of thumb, all petrol cars manufactured from April 2023 onwards (BS6 Phase 2) are E20 compliant.

Which cars are E20 compliant in India?

All cars manufactured from April 2023 onwards under BS6 Phase 2 norms are E20 compliant. This includes models from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Kia, Honda, Toyota, and other major brands. Honda claims all their petrol cars since 2009 are E20 material-compliant. Use our checker tool above to verify your specific model.

Is E20 petrol safe for my car?

Cars manufactured after April 2023 (BS6 Phase 2) are E20 compliant and fully safe. Older cars designed for E10 or regular petrol may experience 5-12% mileage drop and potential fuel system component wear.

How much mileage will I lose with E20?

E20 compliant cars see only 1-3% mileage reduction. Non-compliant older cars may see 5-12% reduction. For example, if your car gives 20 km/l on E10, expect 17.6-19 km/l on E20 if not compliant.

Can E20 damage my engine?

Government and manufacturers say E20 won't damage engines. However, an unpublished ARAI report found that E20 may deteriorate rubber fuel-system components (hoses, gaskets, seals) in vehicles not designed for E20. Regular servicing can help prevent issues.

Are bikes and two-wheelers E20 compliant?

Yes, all two-wheelers (bikes and scooters) manufactured from April 2023 onwards are E20 compliant under BS6 Phase 2 norms. Older bikes follow the same rules as cars. Pre-2023 models were designed for E10 and may see mileage drops with E20. Major brands like Honda, TVS, Bajaj, Hero, and Royal Enfield have confirmed E20 compliance for their newer models.

Is E20 fuel available in India?

Yes, E20 fuel is available at all petrol pumps across India since April 1, 2026. In fact, E20 is now the only petrol available at standard pumps. E20 petrol price ranges from Rs 94-105/litre depending on city. For ethanol-free fuel, Indian Oil XP100 is available at select pumps for Rs 150+/litre.
