E20 compliant cars FAQ.

Everything you need to know about E20 compliant cars, bikes, and ethanol-blended petrol in India.

General questions

What is E20 fuel?

E20 fuel is petrol blended with 20% ethanol and 80% gasoline. India mandated E20 fuel at all petrol pumps from April 1, 2026, as part of its Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme to reduce carbon emissions and crude oil imports. E20 fuel is also referred to as E20 petrol.

What is E20 petrol?

E20 petrol is the same as E20 fuel, i.e. regular petrol blended with 20% ethanol. Since April 2026, all petrol pumps in India sell only E20 petrol. It has a minimum RON (Research Octane Number) of 95, which is actually higher than previous E10 petrol (RON 91). The higher octane can benefit performance in E20 compliant engines.

What does E20 compliant mean?

E20 compliant means a vehicle's engine and fuel system are designed to safely handle E20 petrol (20% ethanol blend). E20 compliant cars have ethanol-resistant fuel lines, seals, gaskets, and engine calibration optimized for higher ethanol content. The terms "E20 compliant" and "E20 compatible" mean the same thing.

Is E20 fuel available in India?

Yes, E20 fuel is available at all petrol pumps across India since April 1, 2026. In fact, E20 is now the only petrol available at standard pumps. You cannot choose between E10 and E20. The nationwide blending target of 20% ethanol was achieved in December 2025.

When did E20 become mandatory in India?

E20 became mandatory at all petrol pumps across India from April 1, 2026. The blending target of 20% was achieved in December 2025, well ahead of the original 2030 deadline.

What is the difference between E10 and E20?

E10 has 10% ethanol and 90% petrol, while E20 has 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. E20 has about 6-7% less energy per litre compared to E10, which means slightly lower fuel efficiency. Only E20 compliant vehicles are optimized for the higher ethanol content.

Can I still get regular petrol without ethanol?

Pure petrol (E0) is virtually unavailable at standard pumps. Indian Oil XP100 is a 100-octane, ethanol-free super-premium petrol available at select pumps for Rs 150+/litre. Standard E20 petrol costs Rs 100-110/litre depending on city.

E20 compliance

How to check if my car is E20 compliant?

Use our free checker tool on the homepage. Select your brand and model to get instant results. You can also check your owner's manual, fuel cap label, or manufacturer website. All cars manufactured from April 2023 onwards (BS6 Phase 2) are E20 compliant by law.

Are all new cars E20 compliant?

Yes, all new petrol cars sold in India from April 2023 onwards must be E20 compliant under BS6 Phase 2 emission norms. This was mandated by the government and applies to all manufacturers.

Is my old car E20 compliant?

Most cars manufactured before April 2023 are NOT E20 compliant. They were designed for E5 or E10 fuel. Honda is a notable exception. They confirmed all their petrol cars sold in India since January 2009 are E20 material-compliant.

Are diesel cars affected by E20?

No, E20 ethanol blending only applies to petrol fuel. Diesel, CNG, and electric vehicles are not affected by the E20 mandate.

Will E20 void my car's warranty?

For E20 compliant cars (2023+), using E20 will NOT void your warranty. For older non-compliant cars, manufacturers have not explicitly stated warranty implications, but any damage attributed to E20 use may not be covered under the original warranty.

Are Honda cars E20 compliant?

Honda has confirmed that all their petrol cars sold in India since January 2009 are E20 material-compliant. This includes popular models like Honda City, Amaze, Civic, Jazz, and Elevate. Honda was one of the first manufacturers to confirm E20 compliance for older models.

E20 compliant bikes

Are bikes E20 compliant in India?

All two-wheelers (bikes and scooters) manufactured from April 2023 onwards are E20 compliant under BS6 Phase 2 norms. Major brands including Honda, TVS, Bajaj, Hero MotoCorp, Royal Enfield, and Yamaha have confirmed E20 compliance for their newer models.

What happens if my bike is not E20 compliant?

Older bikes not designed for E20 may experience 3-8% mileage drop, potential wear of rubber fuel system components, and cold-start issues in winter. The impact is similar to non-compliant cars but generally less severe due to smaller engine sizes.

Mileage impact

How much mileage will I lose with E20?

E20 compliant cars (2023+) see 1-3% mileage reduction. Non-compliant older cars may see 5-12% reduction. Government data suggests 3-3.5% for compliant vehicles and up to 6% for non-compliant ones.

Why does E20 reduce mileage?

Ethanol has approximately 33% less energy per litre compared to pure petrol. A 20% ethanol blend has about 6-7% less energy per litre, which directly reduces fuel efficiency. E20 compliant engines are calibrated to minimize this loss.

Can I improve my mileage on E20?

Yes. Maintain proper tire pressure, avoid aggressive driving, keep your engine well-serviced, replace air filters regularly, and consider using fuel additives designed for ethanol-blended fuels. Some owners report that consistent E20 use allows the ECU to adapt over time.

Engine & fuel system

Can E20 damage my engine?

The government and manufacturers say E20 will NOT damage engines. However, an unpublished ARAI report found that E20 may deteriorate rubber fuel-system components (hoses, gaskets, seals, O-rings) in vehicles not designed for E20 fuel. Long-term effects are still being studied.

What parts of my car might be affected by E20?

In non-compliant vehicles, E20 can affect: fuel lines, rubber hoses, gaskets and seals, O-rings in the fuel system, fuel injectors, and the fuel pump. Ethanol is more corrosive than pure petrol and can absorb moisture, potentially causing water contamination.

How can I protect my older car from E20 damage?

Get regular fuel system inspections, replace fuel filters more frequently (every 15,000-20,000 km), monitor mileage for unusual drops, and consider replacing rubber fuel system components with ethanol-resistant alternatives during routine servicing.

What does a fuel system retrofit cost?

Replacing ethanol-vulnerable components (fuel lines, seals, gaskets) typically costs Rs 2,000-8,000 depending on the vehicle and service centre. This is recommended for pre-2020 non-compliant vehicles as a preventive measure.

E20 petrol price

What is E20 petrol price in India?

E20 petrol is priced the same as previous petrol grades, approximately Rs 94-105/litre depending on your city (July 2026). Mumbai and Kolkata tend to be higher due to state taxes. Despite containing 20% cheaper domestically-produced ethanol, oil companies have not passed savings to consumers.

What is E20 fuel price in Bangalore?

E20 petrol price in Bangalore (Bengaluru) is approximately Rs 101-103/litre as of July 2026. Prices vary slightly by fuel station and oil company (Indian Oil, HP, Bharat Petroleum). For ethanol-free options, Indian Oil XP100 costs Rs 150+/litre at select stations.

Is E20 petrol cheaper than regular petrol?

No, E20 petrol is priced the same as the previous E10 petrol at the pump. Despite ethanol being domestically produced and cheaper than petrol, oil companies have not reduced prices. Combined with 1-12% lower mileage (depending on vehicle compliance), E20 effectively costs consumers more per kilometre driven.

Policy & controversy

Is E25 coming next?

India notified IS 19850:2026 covering E22-E30 blends in May 2026. However, due to public backlash over E20, the government is considering pausing the E25 transition. Any decision on higher blends is expected after an Inter-Ministerial Committee report.

Why is E20 controversial?

53% of vehicle owners rate the rollout as "disastrous" or "ineffective". Key concerns include: unexpected mileage drops for non-compliant pre-2023 vehicles, no fuel choice at pumps (unlike Brazil where drivers choose), allegations of crony capitalism in ethanol production, and the rapid rollout (E10 to E20 in just 3 years).
